Volunteer Opportunities
NAMI Mercer has a team of more than 180 volunteers who work in every aspect of our mission. In 2009, the volunteers donated approximately 6,000 hours of work. All volunteers receive the appropriate training.
Volunteerism is an effective way to empower families affected by mental illness. Empowerment means trust in our strengths and resources as families and consumers while we also recognize our vulnerability and need for support. NAMI Mercer’s work involves families helping families and consumers helping consumers.
Volunteer opportunities include:
- Leading support groups
- Teaching a class or making a presentation
- Organizing events
- Assisting in the office with administrative tasks
- Answering our Helpline
- Serving on committees such as Finance, Advocacy, Development, Multicultural Outreach, Congregational Outreach, College Outreach, Night Out with NAMI, NAMIWalks and others
- Attending community public awareness and outreach events to fight stigma and to tell others about NAMI
- Advocating for persons affected by mental illness through policy research, communication with legislators, and participation in public hearings
- Writing articles for the press and our own newsletter; providing content for our website and marketing material
- Maintaining our resource library
