Stand Out to Stop Stigma

Stigma and prejudice about mental disorders punish individuals, families and communities. Two-thirds of diagnosable, treatable mental illness goes untreated because the stigma of mental illness can be more challenging than the illness itself.

The time to end this stigma is NOW. A coalition of organizations including NAMI Mercer, the Mercer County Department of Human Services and The United Way of Greater Mercer County has joined the fight to reduce the stigma of mental illness in Mercer County and increase access to the resources and opportunities needed for a fuller life.

The best way to fight stigma is to give people recovering from mental illness the opportunity to tell their stories directly to the public. The Campaign is doing this through several programs, including In Our Own Voice.
